About your new Role:
VGA is seeking a Junior Legal Counsel to support the Legal Department in delivering high‑quality legal services across the organisation.
In this role, you will provide accurate legal advice, assist in ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and contribute to the effective management of legal risk. You will also support the optimisation of legal processes, systems, and operational workflows within the department. Reporting to the General Counsel & Company Secretary, you will bring professionalism, attention to detail, and a commitment to developing your legal expertise in a complex and evolving environment.
The Junior Legal Counsel supports the Group Legal Counsel and the General Counsel & Company Secretary by providing accurate and clear legal guidance across all group brands, including:
- Providing legal advice to the business on Australian Consumer Law, including attending all escalated consumer complaint meetings, manage moderate to high-risk complaints from a legal perspective, respond to regulators, develop ACL risk processes, represent VGA in tribunals and lower courts, maintain legal files, and coordinate with business units to gather evidence and deliver legally sound advice.
- Assist with legal review of commercial transactions, including drafting and reviewing contracts, and negotiating terms and conditions with suppliers and customers as directed by the Group Legal Counsel. Advising business on key clauses/legal risks and ensuring contracts include clauses which help VGA appropriately manage risks in line with internal and group policies.
- Reviewing all marketing materials and assets for compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including consumer protection laws, FCAI Advertising Code of Conduct and the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) Code of Ethics.
- Advising on intellectual property matters, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
- Collaborating with the Data Privacy team to maintain compliance across all VGA units, including legal review and advice on the Privacy Act and Spam Act.
- Support VGA Legal with legal projects, ensuring their successful execution within defined timelines and budgets. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish project objectives, allocate resources, monitor progress, and facilitate timely completion.
- Collaborate with the Legal Team and the Data Privacy Team to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. Support the development and implementation of risk management strategies, including legal and regulatory compliance frameworks.
- Organise and maintain all legal files, agreement templates, documents, licenses and contracts (soft and hard copy document).
About you
To succeed in this role, you will need to possess the following:
- Qualified lawyer in Australia with 1–2 years of post‑admission experience, holding a Law degree from an Australian tertiary institution (or equivalent overseas qualification).
- A current practicing certificate or eligibility to hold a practicing certificate.
- Experience in conducting legal research and writing.
- Sound knowledge of the regulatory environment and its operational implications
- Strong attention to detail and excellent time‑management skills. High level of proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications and online legal research
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
